A Struggling Small Town Wants Problems Solved

Very good planning read!!!!!!!!

Steve Lazzara, AICP

At the very southernmost tip of Illinois, the pancake flat cornfields give way to the rolling, forested hills of the Delta. Here, at the windy confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, it feels more southern than Midwest when you arrive at the old river port and factory town of Cairo, once made famous in Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. But Twain might not recognize Cairo today. "People come through Cairo and say 'wow'," says Phillip Matthews, a pastor and community activist. In the last three decades, his hometown lost half its population. Alexander County is not only the poorest county in Illinois; it's also one of the fastest depopulating counties in the United States.

“Readings in Urban Planning and Design” by Pete Pointner FAICP, ALA, ITE

Hi Craig,

This is one of 5 marketing blurbs meant for friends and family. Thank you again!

The purpose of this email is to announce the new fifth edition of my free e-book, “Readings in Urban Planning and Design”. It is now a compendium of 60 papers with over 250 illustrations. Attached is a copy of the table of contents which identifies the new additions. My sincerest thanks to planner Craig Hullinger who helped me create and update the post.

This free e-book is available at readingsinurbanplanninganddesign.blogspot.com. It is a practical resource on environmentally based planning and context sensitive urban design for lay persons, students and younger professionals involved in planning, design and development decisions.

While many of these topics may not be of any practical value for you, you might know a young person interested in architecture, engineering, landscape architecture, public administration or urban planning and design who would find them of value. You may also know someone involved with a planning commission, zoning board or municipal council who would find these papers of interest and value. If so, please share. More information is available on my updated web site at www.petepointner.com.

I am available for pro-bono presentations on many planning and design topics for educational, professional and civic groups. See www.petepointner.com for additional information on the workshops and presentations.

With best regards,

Pete Pointner FAICP, ALA, ITE

Marietta Museum of Art & Whimsey

I have been driving past this nice landscaped Sculpture Park for years.  It is located on Tamiami Trail (Route 41) north of downtown Sarasota.  It looked very nice and interesting from the street.

I was surprised to see it was a parking lot. Very nicely done, and the best landscaped sculpture parking lot I have ever viewed.

Ketchup on Hotdogs?

Ketchup on Hotdogs? YES!

There are many Chicagoans who contend that you should never put ketchup on a hotdog. They have  no idea why but they think that it is somehow the right thing to do. The fix was in.

I disagree.  I am Pro Choice - the hotdog aficionado may use ketchup if she or he wants to. Different strokes for different folks.  If it feels good do it. Don't let daChicaga Hotdog Fashionista's boss you around.

The Hotdog Police can't tell me what to do. And ketchup and pickle relish was defined as a vegetable by the Federal Government many years ago.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketchup_as_a_vegetable

No Ketchup on Chicago Hotdogs a Cruel New Yawk Hoax

Chicagoan's have been victimized by a cruel hoax.  A New Yawker many many years ago started the "No Ketchup on Chicago Dawgs" as a joke to see how many Chicagoan's he could con into believing it. Sadly many Chicagoan's have been fished.

I learned some of the details of this diabolical plot in 1970 on Hill 327 near Danang, Vietnam. Out of boredom Marines and Soldiers would take their tactical radios and turn to the top or bottom channel, then engage whoever had done the same thing into clever (and not so clever) repartee'.  Various racial insults, drug deals, proposed mini intramural wars, and general insults would follow.

One evening a fight developed between a soutsideaChicaga guy and a fellow from New Yawk.  Both had the accents made famous by their respective communities - they were colorful and entertaining but were not speaking the King's English. They traded insults about which city was superior - who had the baddest mafioso, the highest murder rate, who were the toughest, who had the best looking women, the best pizza, etc etc.

Eventually the discussion moved to hotdogs. The Chicaga guy opined about the great dogs in Chicaga, while the New York guy expounded on their great dogs. Each claimed superiority.

Then the New Yawker asked about Ketchup. The Chicaga guy proudly explained that no self respecting Chicagan would use ketchup on a hotdog.

The New Yawker laughed and then went into a long story where he stated that his grandfather had started the no ketchup for Chicago hotdogs as a rumor to fish gullible Chicagoans into believing. According to him this was well known in his family and that they enjoyed knowing that gramps had successfully conned Chicago. In Marine
New Yawker "Fishes" Chicagoans
vernacular gramps had thrown out his line with the fishhook, and landed Chicago on the hook. Chicago was "hooked", "fished", and was not just a "guppy" but a "whale".

I have no idea if he was telling the truth but it sounded convincing. You can look it up.

Of course you might think I am fishing you. But that is my story and I am sticking to it.

Please pass the Ketchup.
