Japan and the United States are neck and neck in total car and commercial vehicle production. For a number of years the quality of Japanese cars was superior to US built cars, and the cost of labor was less in Japan. But the quality and labor cost differences have largely disappeared.


And note that three of the four largest auto producers are high labor cost US, Japan, and Germany.
