147 years ago, the Battle of the Wilderness Campaign marked the beginning of the end of the Civil War. Preservationists are hoping that last month’s announcement by Wal-Mart to relocate their future Orange County, VA store which was originally slated to be built on battlefield land in marks a similar turning point in the fight to save historic places from inappropriate development. We commend Wal-Mart for taking such an important step in the preservation of this hallowed ground and thank all our Members and Supporters who stood with us and the entire Battlefield Coalition -- in this second “Battle of the Wilderness.”

Save America's Treasures Grants Announced at Lincoln's Cottage |
February 1 was an exciting day for historic preservation. Not only were Save America’s Treasures latest grant projects spotlighted, but the announcement was made live from a snow-covered President Lincoln’s Cottage, a National Trust Historic Site and a Save America’s Treasures success story. And even though this program is again facing uncertainty in the federal budget (stay tuned next week for more information), the 60 organizations that will soon receive over $14 million in funding show exactly why our treasures and the program dedicated to saving them are worth fighting for.
