Treasurer-elect Dan Rutherford Makes First Appointment

Illinois State Treasurer-elect Dan Rutherford is pleased to announce the appointment of Kyle Ham to the position of Chief of Staff for the State Treasurer. Kyle most recently served as President/COO of Peoria NEXT and additionally worked as Vice President of The Heartland Partnership, served as Mayor of the City of Toulon for four years and held numerous executive positions with Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan.

"Kyle has a wealth of experience in both public service and in the private sector. I can't think of anyone better for this job. Kyle has the dedication and desire necessary to help me and this office take on the challenges facing our state," said the Illinois State Treasurer-elect.

Ham expressed his excitement to get back to the State Capitol saying, "I am honored by this opportunity and look forward to carrying out Treasurer-elect Rutherford's vision of making Illinois fiscally responsible."

The Illinois State Treasurer serves as the state's banker with the primary responsibility being to protect and wisely invest taxpayers' money. At any given time, the State Treasurer manages about $17 billion in state and local funds. Most of this money is invested so the state can earn interest until it is expended. Funds are also deposited in financial institutions statewide to back low-interest loans to consumers, farmers and businesses to help create jobs, enhance Illinois communities and spur economic growth.

The Treasurer's Office also administers programs to promote the financial health of Illinois residents. The Finally Home program assists prospective homebuyers who have less-than-perfect credit to purchase a home. The Bright Start College Savings Program enables families to invest money tax free for their children's college tuition. The Unclaimed Property Division reunites $1.4 billion in lost, forgotten and abandoned funds with its rightful owners. In addition, the Treasurer's Office offers a series of financial education courses and seminars that focus on personal savings, debt reduction and identity theft.

Dan Rutherford was elected to the State Senate in 2002 and currently serves as Assistant Republican Leader. Senator Rutherford served 10 years as a State Representative prior to his service in the Senate and he has been an executive with the Fortune 100 Company ServiceMaster for over 25 years.

Treasurer-elect Dan Rutherford will be sworn into office on January 10, 2011 at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield. Ham will assume the position of Chief of Staff on the same day.
