Interesting article by Professor Richard Florida in the Atlantic Monthly. He finds that six out of ten people would like to live in a good walkable community.
I agree that a good walkable community is attractive. It is relatively simple to make a good walkable residential neighborhood where people can safely walk in and to nearby neighborhoods. But Americans also like low density living - single family homes - and our commercial centers are large and draw from a very large market area - much larger then walking distance. Still compact contiguous walkable communities are desirable, and we planners and developers will keep trying to make them better.
